Homeopathy engages the principle of vitalism, the concept that living organisms are animated by a life-giving organizing principle, an energy at the core of the organism. This energy has different names in different cultures and modalities; in homeopathy it is known as the vital force. The vital force is responsible for all functions of the organism, both those originating within the organism and those responding to outside stimuli. From the vitalist perspective, body, mind, emotions, and spirit are all one because of their common roots in the vital force. A healthy vital force reflects and produces a state of well-being on all levels.
Homeopathy is based on the law of similars, which posits that a substance that can cause particular symptoms in a healthy person can cure those symptoms when they arise as part of a natural illness. This principle has been noted throughout history and confirmed again and again from experience. Its mechanism is as yet unknown but is under investigation in both clinical and laboratory settings, with promising results.
Homeopathy employs specially prepared natural substances to address the vital force and bring it to balance. Homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle. Their manufacture in the U.S. is supervised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and most of them are available over the counter in health food stores, drugstores, and by mail order.
Classical homeopathy uses one individually-chosen homeopathic remedy at a time to raise overall health and wellbeing by addressing the person as a whole.
