BEGINNER AND ACUTE CARE COURSES

~ Foundations of Classical Homeopathy I

This introduction to classical homeopathy lays the groundwork for all of the Academy’s other courses. We recommend this course as the starting point for all students, those who use homeopathy at home and those who are considering professional training. Homeopathic philosophy and practice are introduced with fundamental concepts such as vitalism, health and disease, acute and chronic illness, and the meaning of symptoms. Materia medica study begins with common remedies, while case examples illustrate the homeopathic method. The course also provides an overview of homeopathy today including how remedies are made, current issues in research, and resources for further engagement.

Prerequisite: none. All are welcome in this course. Even students with some previous experience are advised to take this course as an orientation to their further study.

~ Home Care: Injuries & Emergencies

Homeopathy is renowned for easing pain, speeding healing, and averting long-term problems after injuries of every kind. This course covers the homeopathic treatment of a wide variety of common injuries, including sprains and strains, lacerations and puncture wounds, concussion, dental injuries, and surgical incisions. Emphasis is on minor injuries that can be treated at home, and homeopathic support while seeking conventional care. Note: this is not a course in conventional first aid. We recommend a conventional first aid course for those expecting to treat injuries.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Home Care: Colds, Coughs, and Sinus Problems

Most colds resolve on their own, but what if they don’t? Homeopathy can help prevent them from hanging on and developing into more serious problems. It can also ease coughs and sinus problems that develop on their own or from colds. This course covers home care of acute upper respiratory problems and coughs of all kinds, with a focus on infectious illnesses.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Home Care: Flu and Other Viruses

History claims a venerable place for homeopathy in influenza epidemics, including the 1917-1918 pandemic. While the indicated remedies may change year by year, the method remains the same, as does homeopathy’s effectiveness in preventing and treating the flu. This course covers home care for the flu and related acute illnesses, demonstrating how to treat each individual case and how to identify the genus epidemicus, the most commonly needed remedy or remedies in each epidemic.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Home Care: Children’s Ailments

Homeopathy is a parent’s best friend – quick and effective, gentle and sweet tasting too! This course covers homeopathic home care of many ailments common in the first few years of life, such as colic, croup, childhood illnesses, and difficulties with nursing, teething, and sleeping. The course equips parents to use homeopathy at home and also to discern when constitutional care would benefit their child.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Labor and Delivery

The crucial hours around an infant’s birth can be safer, easier, and more joyful with homeopathy. In this course, expectant parents and their caregivers learn to use the most common remedies required in labor and delivery. Attention is given to the needs of both mother and baby before, during, and immediately after birth.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

~ Tissue Cell Salts

Schussler’s twelve “cell salts” are gentle mineral remedies whose relation to homeopathy has been much debated but whose effectiveness is clear. Considered akin to nutritional elements because they appear as constituents in living cells, the cell salts constitute a therapeutic system in themselves. They can be used at home for a wide variety of ailments, and also are often used alongside professional homeopathic care. For both home caregivers and homeopathic professionals, this course provides the knowledge to apply Schussler’s “Biochemic Method” effectively.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Introduction to Miasms

Hahnemann's experience with homeopathy led him to the theory of miasms as the foundation of all disease. An understanding of miasms opens the door to deeper and more lasting work in homeopathy. Using miasmatic analysis, we can perceive each case more accurately, understand remedies more fully, and achieve greater success in our practice. This course introduces the concept of miasms and explains its philosophy and clinical applications through principles and case examples.

Prerequisite: Foundations I.

~ Homeopathic Philosophy I

Homeopathic philosophy is about both theory and practice. It describes how homeopaths think as well as what they do and why. A sound understanding of philosophy is perhaps the single most important factor for success in homeopathy: when one understands the principles, one can handle virtually any event. Drawing on Samuel Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine and other masterworks in homeopathic philosophy, this course provides an introduction to the major concepts that describe dynamic vital processes such as healthy functioning, disease, and healing.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

~ Materia Medica I

Understanding remedies is an art in itself. In order to transcend “this remedy for that condition” prescribing, we have to grasp each remedy in all its complexity. This course introduces some of the most commonly needed remedies in our materia medica, not only providing knowledge of the remedies themselves, but also demonstrating how to study remedies effectively. Case examples illustrate remedies in a variety of contexts.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

~ Clinical Methods I

The homeopathic method is consistent and predictable in both acute and chronic prescribing. It follows a series of reliable steps that build upon each other. Solid clinical skills depend on mastery of each step and understanding of how the steps interact with each other. This course introduces the steps in the homeopathic process and provides hands-on practice. Emphasis is on case taking and case analysis using both acute and chronic case examples.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

~ Professional Development I

The past influences how things are today, and also explains why. Starting with a comprehensive history, this course situates the homeopathic profession in relation to conventional medicine and other modalities. For general interest as well as for aspiring professionals, an awareness of one’s place in a wider context encourages a clear identity. Focus is on the United States, with references to homeopathy around the world.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

~ Intensive Case Study I

Satisfying certification requirements, the Intensive Case Study is a weekend seminar in residence, providing live, in-person interaction with teachers and other students. Real cases on paper and video provide the framework for applying homeopathic philosophy, practicing the homeopathic method, and studying materia medica.

Prerequisite: Foundations I

ADVANCED COURSES

~ Foundations of Classical Homeopathy II

This course serves as a crucial pivot point between the first two levels of the Professional Training Sequence. Connecting the courses already taken while foreshadowing the content of those to come, the course also brings students to a new level of collaborative study in preparation for the learning challenges in Level II.

Prerequisite: Completion of Level I or permission.

~ Women’s Health

Homeopathy offers special benefits for ailments that encompass the whole person and also for those that elude diagnosis – both of which are often true of women’s ailments. This course teaches homeopathic approaches to “female problems” including menstrual difficulties, infertility, problems at menopause, and tumors and cysts.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Chronic Miasms

A detailed study of Hahnemann’s theory of the chronic miasms and its application in practice, this course examines Hahnemann’s three original miasms and two others identified since Hahnemann's time. Topics include what their source diseases reveal about the miasms, how miasm theory contributes to homeopathic philosophy, and what miasmatic analysis tells us about the dynamics of disease. Case studies and practical examples provide hands-on practice as students develop confidence in using miasm theory to analyze cases, study remedies, project prognosis, and manage cases over time.

Prerequisite: Foundations II or permission.

~ Homeopathic Philosophy II

This course delves deeper into topics examined in Philosophy I to reach a more nuanced level of understanding. New concepts are introduced with an emphasis on their practical application, such as the nature of chronic diseases, natural and artificial diseases, and hierarchies of symptoms.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Materia Medica II

Studying remedies in groups illuminates their relationships both in the natural world and in the materia medica. This course examines groups of remedies that are interrelated in various ways: by relationships in the natural world, by system affinity in the organism, and by miasmatic composition. Case examples illustrate remedies in a variety of contexts and presentations.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Clinical Methods II

Accurate case analysis is at the heart of the homeopathic process. While continuing hands-on practice with case taking and repertorization, this course focuses primarily on extensive practice in analysis of chronic cases, including understanding the initial case, individualizing potency and dose, and assessing remedy response.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Professional Development II

Accurate self-awareness, self-assessment and flexibility to grow are essential to the healing clinician’s effectiveness. This course provides tools and develops habits for discernment, inner attentiveness, and long-term professional maturation.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Intensive Case Study II

Satisfying certification requirements, the Intensive Case Study is a weekend seminar providing live, in-person interaction with teachers and other students. Real cases on paper and video provide the framework for applying homeopathic philosophy, practicing the homeopathic method, and studying materia medica. Locations vary.

Prerequisite: Foundations II

~ Foundations of Classical Homeopathy III

This course serves as the pivot point between the second and third levels of the Professional Training Sequence. Focus is on ensuring that students have assimilated their learning from Level II as a coherent whole, and preparing them for the increased professionalism of Level III.

Prerequisite: Completion of Level II or permission.

~ Homeopathic Philosophy III

This course ventures into advanced topics in homeopathic philosophy, including the philosophical basis of provings, miasmatic shifts during the course of cure, and palliative prescribing. To reach a deeper level of understanding, we revisit fundamental topics in Hahnemann’s Organon in light of their practical application in particular cases. The course also considers homeopathy’s relationship with disciplines such as quantum physics and mind/body medicine.

Prerequisite: Foundations III

~ Materia Medica III

This course fills out the student’s understanding of materia medica by considering “small” remedies, “specifics,” and unusual presentations of well-known remedies. The study of remedy groups continues with reference to the natural world, system affinity, and miasmatic composition. Case examples illustrate remedies in a variety of contexts and presentations.

Prerequisite: Foundations III

~ Clinical Methods III

While continuing hands-on practice with case taking, case analysis, and repertorization, this course focuses on challenging issues in long-term case management. Difficult cases, allopathic medications, antidotes, end-of-life homeopathy, and the second prescription are some of the topics covered in this bridge to clinical practice.

Prerequisite: Foundations III

~ Professional Development III

This course focuses on the homeopath’s relationships with clients/patients and the community. Issues considered include client/patient education, professional ethics, issues in scientific research, and engagement with the homeopathic profession.

Prerequisite: Foundations III

~ Intensive Case Study III

Satisfying certification requirements, the Intensive Case Study is a weekend seminar providing live, in-person interaction with teachers and other students. Real cases on paper and video provide the framework for applying homeopathic philosophy, practicing the homeopathic method, and studying materia medica. Locations vary.

Prerequisite: Foundations III
